Backyard Inspiration

We have a small—18' x 19'—backyard that was shaded by a large maple until a year and a half ago when it had to come down due to a fungal condition. The yard was hard to do much with because of the shade but now with the increased sunlight we've been able to experiment more with gardening and other decorative planting. Last summer I discovered that grass takes way too much watering to maintain so I've been waiting for inspiration to strike to find an alternative. I finally saw inspiration in this video about houses in Japan, specifically when he walks through the backyard garden area. I can suddenly see a path of bricks or stones circling around from the concrete stair landing below in the above picture to towards the back and around to the far side on the other side of the deck where there are steps down to the door entering the basement. I like how the path in the video has low vines growing onto it so walking around it you would feel close to the plants around it.

I've started drawing a rough plan for how it would work:

More planning to come...
